So it's certainly a pleasant surprise to see an Indian-born actor in the hit South Korean series Squid Game. In the Netflix series, Indian actor Anupam Tripathi plays Ali, a Pakistani migrant factory worker. He plays the Squid Game out of desperation to provide for his family. There is no argument that Ali is one of the most loveable characters in Squid Game, and a report even described him as South Korea’s most genuine and fragile character yet. Well, there’s no doubt about that. Inside Ali’s strong demeanor lies a heart of gold, but sadly, this golden heart was also the one that actually caused his tragic demise.

Despite Ali's tragic fate in the show, the character quickly became a fan favorite. The talented actor is taking the world by storm, having appeared in a slew of South Korean dramas and films. There are many Korean TV series on Netflix today, and given Squid Game’s success, it will be no surprise if the streaming giant releases more and more original TV shows from the same region in the coming years. But many of you might be wondering, who is this amazing gentleman who graced us with nothing but kindness and purity in the latest Squid Game series? Is he a migrant in Korea, like the character Ali he has played? How did he get to Korea? Who is this talented actor behind the green tracksuit? Well, for one, the character Ali is played by Indian actor Anupam Tripathi, and he is now 32 years of age. Anupam Tripathi studied at the Korea National University of Arts

Anupam Tripathi was born in the Indian city of New Delhi and relocated to South Korea in 2010. After hearing about a scholarship at Korea National University of Arts from a friend, he decided to apply. When he moved to the country, Tripathi struggled with the language barrier.

Anupam made it his mission to understand the character on a deeper level

After landing the role in Squid Game, Tripathi went above and beyond to prepare for the part. To portray the raw emotions of Ali on-screen. Of course, I never lost a smile just like Ali.”

He intentionally built up his body for the Squid Game role

Anupam admitted that at the time he got contacted to do the Pakistani role at Squid Game, he knew he still had a long way to go to prepare for it. The next stage was to prepare to play a Pakistani character. Tripathi got into this by watching BBC documentaries. “I tried to go as close as I could to the character,” said Tripathi.

Anupam debuted as a movie actor in the 2014 film Ode To My Father, the fourth highest-grossing movie in South Korea. Ode To My Father revolves around the story of Yoon Deok Su. Anupam appears briefly in the film as a Sri Lankan man living in Busan. He comes across the elder Deok Su.. Although the actor played small parts in his previous work, Tripathi had the breakout role in Netflix’s Squid Game.

Before Squid Game, you may have seen Anupam in some of the most popular Korean shows. Remember the heartfelt earthquake scene from Descendants Of The Sun? During the aftermath of the earthquake, Anupam played the power plant worker who offers his boots to Dr. Kang Mo Yeon. He was most recently seen in Season 1 of Hospital Playlist, Taxi Driver, and Space Sweepers. In Squid Game, Anupam played the role of Ali Abdul, a factory worker who decides to join the game to provide for his migrant family. In an interview, Anupam talked about empathizing with Ali as someone who is working abroad as well.

Aside from acting on-screen, Tripathi has a theater background as well. According to India Times, the Squid Game star was a theater actor. Since coming to Korea, Anupam has landed various roles in stage plays.

The Squid Game actor has revealed that he initially planned to leave South Korea for good before his acting career took off. “One day, it got me thinking while taking a walk, ‘Anupam, stay in Korea!
